Why the why-to is so important

Innovators solve problems. Imitators tend to cause them.

By the nature of their ground-breaking work, innovators have to come to an understanding of WHY things work — the principles, laws and insights that govern the universe — before they can create the structures, methodologies, tools and systems that are actually HOW things work.

Those critically important WHY-TOs are usually invisible — hidden behind barriers like time, distance, cost, ignorance or hard work.

Imitators see the effects — the HOW-TOs — and think that's all there is to it. If they can just learn HOW TO do a thing, they'll be in control.

Wrong!

Until you know WHY it works, you can NEVER be in control of a thing, system, process or concept.

Join now!So we end up with a world full of imitators wanting to know HOW TO ("Don't bother me with all that other stuff, just tell me HOW!" is their single-minded catchcry), and a handful of innovators left to clean up the mess and find safer, easier, better, smarter ways to make life easier for the mindless majority.

I really appreciated that you talked about "Why-to's." Frankly, very few authors/speakers take the time to explain "why" things are important — they're in such a rush to get to the "how-to's." But you took the time to get behind the "how-to's" to the "reasons why" — and that's what made your article so powerful and so effective.
